My name is Trevor Tacey and I have been in recovery for more than 20 years and I am convinced that I know the answer to the question of why some people use drugs or alcohol recreationally without too many consequences and are able to get on with their lives, while others like myself might start off that way but eventually it would take over my life and it would eventually completely consume it.
My own addiction covered three decades but this is not about my struggles, instead I want to give someone some hope that in spite of how many times you might have tried and failed to overcome your addictions, no matter what the substance, I believe there is an answer and to start with I will give you a simple questionnaire that might give you some hope and a reason for why you have struggled so much and can’t find a way out in spite of all the help that you might have had in the past. This questionnaire is ten questions that cover a number areas but by no means is it comprehensive.
In 1997 a study of 17,000 people one of the biggest studies ever done and spanned some 20 years of the participants lives came up with some incredible results. This study was called The ACE Study, ACE stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences and it showed that a high ACE score would lead to serious illnesses including heart problems and even cancer but regarding addiction it was saying that if you scored more than 6 Aces you were 46 times that equates to 4,600% more likely to become an intravenous drug user than someone who didn’t have any. It also indicates that there it is more likely that they will experience involvement in violence and Prison, among other things.
There are a lot of eminent people who support this studies’ findings. One of these is Dr Danial Sumrok, The Director of the Centre for Addiction Sciences at the University of Tennessee. He says Addiction should be described as “Ritualised compulsive comfort- seeking” a normal response to the adversity experienced in childhood.
Dr Gabor Mate’ author of “ In the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts” and “When the Body Says No” He spent a number of years working in one of the worst areas of the Downtown East-side of Vancouver with addicted men and women. He witnessed the depths of addiction and heard their stories and came to the conclusion that Addiction was a means to escape pain, painful thoughts, memories and feelings.
It seems that the main reason why 60% of those that are being treated for addictions are relapsing in the first year is because the root cause of the addiction is not being addressed! It is pointless detoxing people if you aren’t dealing with the reason for the addiction.
I consider myself lucky because when I started my recovery journey I knew that my unresolved childhood traumas had to be dealt with. I didn’t know about the ACE Study and I had not found EFT yet. I was searching and when I found EFT and later MR my life was transformed. There are no words that could do justice to how much my life changed as a result of these simple techniques. I have now made it my mission to reach as many people as possible and at least make this information available.
I think that more Addiction Treatment Providers are realising that this is a major consideration in the recovery process and needs to be addressed. When I went through treatment it wasn’t considered and I owe a lot to Narcotics Anonymous because I was able to stay clean until I found someone who knew about EFT and would help me release the shackles of those old wounds once and for all, so that I could enjoy my life at last, feeling comfortable with who I am and being grateful for where I am right now.
If you decide to look at the 10 questions and just to add this can apply to anyone. You don't have to have an Addiction to try this. Over 50% of those taking part had at least one ACE. There are many different ways that we can be effected by these unresolved traumas but also there is a lot of help out there. If you do feel you need help then it is about finding the right person or treatment for you.
I only found my answers when I made it my responsibility to search and find what I needed.
IF YOU THINK SOMEONE MIGHT FIND THIS INFORMATION USEFUL PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE IT AND TO LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS I WILL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER THEM. MY BEST WISHES.
